HENRY’S CORNER
Speaking of The
Thing, we were, weren’t we, the 1951 release, may have been
the first ‘fright
flick’ many of us saw. The actual title is The Thing From
Another
World, and
it is an adaptation of John Campbell’s short story ”
Who Goes
There”. Even
today, the movie can still raise the hair on the back of the neck of
those who’ve seen it numerous times. This film was the first
to establish the now
now familiar
plot line of an alien invader. In it, an alien body encased in ice is
retrieved from an artic ice flow, taken to a weather station
where it’s revived and
wreaks havoc before being dispatched. One claim to fame the film
has is that the title role was played
by the 6’7”, 235 lb. James Arness of Gunsmoke fame. Arness refused to
attend the film’s premier, as
he was somewhat embarrassed by the role saying the make up made him look like a
giant carrot.
Ironically, the creature actually was supposed to be a vegetable that requires
human blood to survive.
Although Christian Nyby was in fact the director of the movie, many still
credit it to Howard Hawks.
