                                  The Heartsong Benefit Show

                                   by cub reporter Mouse Vanhoozer

Some of you may have attended the Sept. 23rd concert at Heartsong Church in Cordova. It was so crowded that I did not see everyone who may have been there. In general, it was a grand evening of listening to some of the more notable musicians from the 60' and 70's from Memphis. The venue had a great sound system and stage, but the rest was a bit Spartan. Think back to the Armory and  add in plastic chairs to sit in.

The first act was Eddie Harrison of the Shortkuts, who had Randy Haspel singing harmony with him. They were very good backed up by an outstanding house band from the Church. Randy Haspel of Randy and The Radiants then did a set of his own and had a few of his former band members join with the house band. He was good as well. Larry Raspberry did the third set with the house band and had Jim Dickinson sit in as well. Jim is a well-known local legend of the music scene and even toured with the Gentrys on their very first tour as their keyboard player. Raspberry is still a very good performer and was a big factor in putting this program together.

George Klein was the emcee for the night and did his usual professional job of telling anecdotes about each act.Tommy Burk and The Counts were the first act to perform stand alone, and they had not lost a beat even though they only got to rehearse for two days. It was great to see them all on stage and they had added Wayne Thompson’s wife to help sing backup and she added a lot. Tommy was lively and animated on the mike and really looked to be having a good time. They did 2 of their records, one Beatle song and one from the Rolling Stones and to no ones surprise closed with Stormy Weather to a standing ovation. Thomas was the best drummer of the night.

They were followed by Flash and The Board of Directors. Flash added some horns and sounded very good. The last set was Interstate 55 who were mostly from Missouri, but had come to Memphis a lot in the late 60's.I had never heard them before, but they were very good and had quite a broad range of songs from Chicago to the Yardbirds. They were so smooth it would not surprise me if they were still playing together at times.

The show ended with a giant jam on Louie, Louie, Twist and Shout, and Hang on Sloopy. It was a fun night and I saw a lot of people that I know and all seemed to be having fun.

My name is Jonathan Brown. I am one of Finley's sons. I was looking for his recording information online when I came across this site. I think it is great. To be able to hear a couple stories about my dad is touching.

If any of you have more memories to share about Finley Brown please email them to me at soulfood@excite.com. I am also looking for anything of memorabilia having to do with my dad, including any of his old recordings. If you can help me it would be greatly appreciated. Email me or call me at 901-409-6161. SAY WHAT?!!
"They ain't going to get in no fight, they ain't going to get in no fight, then as soon as we turned around, they was beating dude up, stomping him, beating him in his face, all that," according to Charles Curtis who witnessed the Melrose High School fights.

"It was one dude, he stepped on somebody's shoe and dude's shoe who he stepped on, they just started fighting, that's how the whole thing started," one student said.                                                                       Provided by WMCTV

Tips From the Redneck Book of Manners~~~~~~

from Smoke Signals’ etiquette editor Betty Jo

1. Never take a beer to a job interview.
2. Always identify people in your yard before shooting at them.
3. It's considered poor taste to take a cooler to church.
4. If you have to vacuum the bed, it is time to change the sheets.
5. Even if you're certain that you are included in the will, it is still considered

Warnings to Warriors – From Smoke Signals Medical Advisor Dr. Vinny Boombatz

If your throat tickles, scratch your ear!

"When the nerves in the ear are stimulated, it creates a reflex in the throat that can cause a  muscle spasm," says Scott Schaffer, M.D., president of an ear, nose, and throat specialty center in Gibbsboro, New Jersey. "This spasm relieves the tickle."

Mattresses have an average life span of 8 to 10 years. They grow some nasty stuff in that time; one study links mattress bacteria to sudden infant death syndrome. MORE ON SLEEP

The Three Little Pigs    from Sandra Dotson

Three Little Pigs went out to dinner one night. The waiter came and took their drink order.
"I would like a Sprite," said the first little piggy.
"I would like a Coke," said the second little piggy.

"I want beer, lots and lots of beer," said the third little piggy.

The drinks were brought out and the waiter took their orders for dinner.

"I want a nice big steak," said the first piggy.
"I would like the salad plate," said the second piggy.
"I want beer, lots and lots of beer," said the third little piggy.

The meals were brought out and a while later the waiter approached the
table and asked if the piggies would like any dessert.
"I want a banana split," said the first piggy.
”I want a root beer float” said the second piggy".
”I want beer, lots and lots of beer," exclaimed the third little piggy

"Pardon me for asking," said the waiter to the third little piggy, " but why have you only ordered beer all evening?"

The third piggy says –

"Well, somebody has to go 'Wee, wee, wee all the way home!

A Letter from Leeba

One of these days we will get to another SupperClub, I hope.  John and I will be out  of the country with one of our sons and his wife.  We are taking them to Chile and Argentina as they are fluent in Spanish, and we had to use up a voucher given from the trip we were on when my father went to heaven last summer.I hope you and yours are fine.  We are awaiting # 21 grandchild at any moment and preparing to spend half our year in Panama next to another daughter.  I will write when I have a moment to collect my thoughts.

Sept. 16. Oakland, Tn. – Larry Solomon and the PIGS UR PERFECT team placed in three events in judging Saturday, at the Oakland Bar-B-Q contest. The team placed 2nd in the sauce contest, 6th in the rib judging and 2nd in “Anything Butt” with a delicious dish of fish covered with a seafood topping.

Sept.19 – Patsy Sims Moore, who has been diagnosed with mycobacterium  avium complex, MAC, was featured in an article appearing in the Northwest Arkansas Times CLICK FOR STORY. Also, CLICK HERE see Patsy’s photo gallery. Hopefully we will soon have her bio to post.

NEWS FOR THE OUT-OF-TOWNER for more, visit Commercial Appeal

Sept. 5 – The Beat Goes On.  A brawl at Trezevant High sent two students to Juvenile Court and three to the hospital. In a separate incident at a Kingsbury Middle School football game, shots fired by an adult, resulted in the cancellation of the remainder of the game. One student was taken to the hospital with an injury to his hand. It is unclear if that injury was caused by the shot. Sept. 15…and the beat goes on. In an attempt to best performances by Craigmont and Trezevant, the Melrose student body broke into 5 separate melees Friday sending 1 student to  the hospital and 10 to jail. (SEE “Say What”) IT COULD BE WORSE. In Kathmandun, Nepal, 67 students aged 9 – 16 fainted from apparent mass hysteria, after school officials killed a snake. Priests subsequently exorcised the “evil spirit” of the snake, considered by many in the region as being sacred.

Cue the Theme From S.W.A.T. – In related developments, the Memphis School Board is planning to hire 60 part-time “hall monitors” to serve as eye’s and ears for the police officers stationed in virtually every city middle and high school. Back in the day, we had Shirley Potts. We didn’t need no stinking monitors.

Sept.15 – The Drought ends. The Warriors’ 24 game losing streak, stretching back to their 2003 victory over ECS, ended with a 38-7 crushing of Craigmont. Sept. 22 – and just like that, it’s over. ECS beat the Warriors 27-0. Ironically, ECS,  3rd in the Commercial Appeal's local prep rankings, is coached by Jim Heinz, husband of the former Jane Wright CHS'63. Sept. 29 - Bolton 35, Central 14. Déjà vu all over again.

Sept. 21 – Oct. 1,The Mid-South Fair may die at 150. The 150-year run of the fair that we all grew up with may end this fall. The rides that permanently stood in the fairgrounds have been removed, leaving only the mobile midway rides to provide thrills. City leaders are undecided on how to use the valuable acreage between Southern Ave. and Fairview Jr. High.

We're number 2, we're number 2 - "Sperlings Best Places" quotes the FBI's Uniform crime report saying that Memphis has the 2nd worst violent crime rate among the nations' largest cities, ranking behind TucsonAZ.

Sept. 5,1906, -
Happy Birthday to you... the college "projectile pass" (forward pass) celebrates its centennial today. Bradbury Robinson threw the first one for St. Louis U. to Jack Schneide in a game against Carroll College. It fell incomplete. On their next possession, Robinson again teamed up with Schneide for a 20 yard completion which resulted in  a touchdown. SLU went on to win 22-0. A few weeks later, George Parratt playing for Massillon threw the first forward pass in a pro game to Dan Riley. Massillon went on to beat Benwood-Moundsville.

Oct. 26, 1962 - While most of us were in a 12th grade class, America, in the midst of the Cuban missle crisis, went to DEFence CONdition 2 for the only time in history. DEFCON 2 is the second highest defence condition used between the Joint Chiefs of Staff and their commanders, and it represents the closest America has ever come to nuclear war. The US Strategic Air Command remained at that level until Nov.15. CLICK FOR MORE ON THAT

Oct. 30, 1961 - While we were in the 11th grade, The Soviet Union dropped a 27 ton hydrogen bomb, The Czar, on an island in the Artic Sea. With 3800 times the power of the bomb dropped on Nagasaki, it is still the largest man-made explosion in human history.
