ATTENTION OUT – OF – TOWNERS!

In order to allow the Warrior Tribe to keep abreast of the hometown news, Phil has added links to three Memphis T.V. stations, in addition to the Commercial Appeal, to the home page of our web site. Not only will this allow out of town viewers access to videos of news stories, some of these stations also have web cams for real time, traffic and weather viewing. Think of the possibilities. The Deatons in sunny Florida can view the mayhem in Memphis, during a snowfall. Jeanne Rostaing in Brooklyn could view the Mississippi River instead of the East River. Richard Monsarrat in Alaska could view something other than snow. Additionally, when an important news story occurs in Memphis, Smoke Signals will alert you to it. Remember, when news breaks, we fix it.

North to Alaska, then California Dreaming. from Ida and Leonard Engelberg

Ida and I took two vacations this summer. The first was an Alaskan cruise. The Alaska pictures are of Ida and me in Denali, which is the land portion of most Alaska cruises. We werefortunate enough to see Mt. McKinley, the highest mountain in North America, as we hit one of the GOOD days. We were told on average there are only 66 days during the year you can see it from the park. We did a raft trip thru a national eagle preserve in Juneau. They dressed us up, literally for the weather. If you white water raft, this river was a minus, 2 but the scenery was unforgettable.

Our eldest son, Paul, took us to THE GROVE. It’s an upscale shopping center in LA on the former site of The Farmers Market. Part of the Market remains but the majority of the land is utilized as a pedestrian mall with shops and a trolley that runs on tracks through it ala Disney World. We had lunch at a deli in the Market and are relaxing in front of a koi pond. The fish are huge because they gobble up popcorn thrown by the visitors. No pigeon poop in LA just fat fish. The second LA picture is at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley,Ca. We got to go through Air Force One, which was retired and is housed at the library along with the presidential limousine, chase car, and a secret Service car. Also the presidential helicopter is in the same building. Don't miss this place if you have a chance. CLICK AND SCROLL DOWN.

According to the CNN Money Calculator, if you earned $100,000 in Memphis, you would need to earn $192,193 as an equivalent salary in Los Angeles and a staggering $201,188 in Simi Valley,Ca.

PEARLY GATES from Paula Wicker Hamby

A man appeared before St. Peter at the pearly gates. "Have you Ever done anything of particular merit?" St. Peter asked.

"Well, I can think of one thing," the man offered. "Once, on a trip to the Black Hills out in South Dakota, I came upon a gang of high-testosterone bikers, who were threatening a young woman.

I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn't listen.

So, I approached the largest and most heavily tattooed biker and smacked him on the head, kicked his bike over, ripped out his nose ring and threw it on the ground. I yelled, "Now back off biker boy or you'll answer to me!"

St. Peter was impressed. "When did this happen?"

"Just a few minutes ago".

Penny pulls pin – from Penny Dollar Campbell

Well, after 32 years, I decided enough is enough, so I am now a retired teacher. I taught my final class Sept. 29 in Albuquerque, moved all my meager belongingsinto storage for a while and am on the road! I will only have a POB for a few weeks/months - who knows? It's POB 21316, ABQ., NM, 87154. Then I will either be in Ohio or Colorado.

I spent several hair-raising months helping my 22 year-old daughter get married in Durango, CO. It rained almost every day, but God saw fit to let it stop for 1/2 hour so they could complete the ceremony along side a beautiful small lake outside Durango.

Thank God for Clairol, or I would be completely gray after these past 4 months!

I have tried to contact Carol Raines ever since hurricane Katrina. Does anyone have an email address for her? If so please send it to both me and to Smoke Signals.

I hope to get through Memphis. If I do, I'd love to meet up with some of the Supper Club people.

A letter -  from Leeba Andrews Curlin

I am sending this out to a wide audience to ask you if God should remind you to also pray for Caleb as he is on his way right now to Iraq.  Most of you know that his older brother David is already there serving as a chaplain in Baghdad.  Caleb will be somewhere near Baghdad serving as a second lieutenant.  We would appreciate your prayers for them both, as they will oftenbe in harm's way.  I know that many of your have a plate full of people to pray for, but whenever you hear the name David, think of David and Goliath or David in the desert, or when you hear the name Caleb, think of his taking the mountain of the giants at the age of 80.  Both of them were named for great men of faith who had the approval of God.  We pray that they will be an honor to their God who made them and gave his life for them.

A review of the Heartsong Benefit – from Patty Paschall Bladon

I attended the concert/garage band fest et al at Heartsong and attest to the terrific time enjoyed by all! FYI, Interstate 55 is a fabulous band - musicians still playing today - everywhere!  Leader/ keyboard is Jon Hornyak, head of the local NARAS chapter; Jon really keeps music of all kinds going and music news traveling in this area.  Another FYI - re the forever young Geo.Klein -  we have a very nice Communication Dept.scholarship here at the U of M in his name - so heads up Warriors whose  might be headed in broadcasting. (Flash asks when the phrase "garage band" came into use….think I'll tell him to ask Ron Hall who did the 'KNO special and book.)

Laura and Ray’s first grandchild is seven-year-old Jake Inman.

Oct.20 – EVERYBODY RISE !  from Susan Lowry Bridwell

Friday was a day to remember. US Supreme Court Chief Justice Roberts spoke to the Charleston School of Law and the Legal Community here. The program at Guillard Auditorium was amazing and so personal. Chief Justice Roberts is a real person and very approachable. There was much laughter and drama. The questions asked varied from "... How do you balance your personnel life and professional life?" Roberts said that he had a great mentor in Rehnquist, who told everyone early on ... your children will be 5 years old only once and you have " this job" the rest of your life. So go home to your family. Another question dealt with the confirmation hearings and can they continue as they are? Roberts said something has got to give... they need to be shorter and questions need to be those that they can speak to.

The private Cocktail party was very small and we felt very honored to be included. The Secret Service was everywhere outside of One Battery and halfway through the party they came in and did a walk through. They were NOT friendly looking and almost "gangster like". Not what I pictured. I did not speak to Roberts but my husband, Randall, did. I spoke to Mrs. Roberts and she is an attorney also. She turned the table and asked me questions ...... such as what do you do here in Charleston..... my answer was.... I am a Gardener. She turned to her Aide for the day and they nodded. She had been told about" gardening in Charleston" . This was their first visit here.    CLICK AND SCROLL DOWN

Oct., 31- from Leeba

This is a quick update on Caleb.  We missed his message early this morning on the answering machine, but he told us that his vehicle had been blown up, but he was okay with a busted ear drum.  Many men have been killed and blown up.  He was very sober sounding.  Pray for all those who have lost family members and offer a doxology for the grace bestowed for Caleb.  He sounded confident in God.  I am lead to pray that he will express praise and thanksgiving continually for as it says in the Psalms says, "whoever offers praise glorifies me and prepares the way so that I can show him my salvation."  God wants to draw men to his grace and love.  May he get their attention.  Thanks for all your remembrances of him and others as well.  We are humbled by his favor when so many suffer.
