It’s A Despicable
and Dastardly Deed that
Not since Smoke Signals ran the story of Bwana Boz,
the coon killer, have we received the flood of
emails that the Xtra regarding
the ebay auction of Iris Duncan’s
’63 Central Yearbook generated.
After this story broke, we dispatched our investigative reporter Carl Kolchak
to
Duncan’s comments. According to Ms. Duncan “ The book must have
inadvertently gotten caught
up in an estate
sale.” Click For Mug Shot.
After the last grand reunion, Mary Ann Vlahos, widow of Paul Vlahos
(CHS'65) donated a near
pristine 63 yearbook, which we will auction in the not too distant future.

Wallsmith' first novel, BOOZE, BLOOD and

been published. It is a fictionalized account of an actual event that occurred
in
the late '60's. It is available at Barnesandnoble.com, Booksamillion.com or can
be ordered through
your local, favorite bookstore. Cricket promises that it is a real
"PAGE-TURNER". Rod has begun
work on a sequel.

BE ADVISED
- A panic alarm,
always at your fingertips from Phil
Aquino
Consider this. Most recent model automobiles come with a key fob
containing a panic alarm button.
In addition to having your finger on this button while walking to and from you
car; keep it close at
hand while around the house. These alarms can usually be activated from a
considerable distance
from the car. Thus, be prepared to use it in the event of a home invasion.
Leave it bedside at night.
Once activated, these annoying alarms can easily be heard from inside a closed
garage. It is almost
guaranteed to frighten off an intruder while summonsing curious neighbors.

Reeder
Dowdy sends these words of advice to women, who may
experience heart attack symptoms
entirely different from men.
While not having eaten any
food, the feeling that you’ve swallowed a golf ball that’s slowly and
painfully moving down the esophagus.
Squeezing motions racing up the spine and under the sternum.
Discomfort spreading into the throat and jaw.
If you experience any of these,
first and foremost CALL FOR AN AMBULANCE! Don’t try to drive.
Don’t let someone else drive. CALL FOR AN AMBULANCE!!

After drying my sheets, I put both sheets and one pillowcase in the other
pillowcase. Fold neatly in
a square. Next time you change sheets, you just take the one pillowcase and all
the sheets and
pillowcases are inside. No need to look for matches.

HENRY’S
CORNER
Speaking of Jay and the Americans, we were,
weren’t we? The group, with
lead singer John Traynor, began as six
classmates from
themselves “The Harbor Lites” In 1959, they released a
local hit “Is It Too
Much Too Ask”. In 1960, they signed with record moguls Jerry Leiber and Mike
Stoller. United Artist wanted to name the group Blinky Jones and the Americans,
but Traynor convinced them to use his nickname “Jay”. In 1963, after their
single “She Cried” charted
at #5, Traynor left the group and was replaced by David Blatt AKA David Black.,
AKA Jay Black. In
Oct. of ’64, “Come A Little Bit Closer” became their highest charting single at
#3. They changed their
musical approach and began covering popular singles beginning with the beautiful
“Cara Mia”, which
is probably their most remembered hit, charting at #4 in ’65. Their last single
was a cover of the
Drifter’s “There Goes My Baby” in ’71. During their career, Jay and the
Americans produced 10 singles
that charted in the top 40. Court
rulings have prevented Black from touring as “Jay and the Americans”
but allow Jay Black and the Americans.

Depending on whom you ask, the term 86’d
refers either to the bartender’s practice of switching from
100 proof booze to 86 proof once the drinker is too intoxicated to notice the
difference. Or possibly the
term originated during prohibition, in Chumley’s speakeasy at
that a police raid was imminent, the bartender announce “86 everybody” which
meant that customers
were to leave through one door as the police were about to enter through
another.
One hit wonder Bobby “Boris” Picket”, whose
single “Monster Mash” hit # 1 on the charts in 1963 and
#3 in 1973, died April 25th of leukemia at the age of 69.
