             PLAY - WHO DAT WARRIOR?

CLICK on the mystery pic and identify each Warrior.

This pic was provided by Sandra Dodson. The reader who correctly id’s the most Warriors will
receive a tip of the hat and will be announced in Smoke Signals. The correct identification of each
pictured Warrior will be determined by the consensus of entries, mainly because neither Sandra
nor the Smoke Signals staff has a clue as to whom these folks are. Hint – the guy standing ain’t
the teacher. Extra credit awarded for identifying the class teacher and the subject being taught.

Send us a previously unpublished photo, i.e. not appearing in a Central yearbook, for the next

MEMORIES from Sarah Kirchen

Dorothy Dow's reminder of Miss Mauzy's paper crumbling aversion brought back very clear

memories of my humiliation as a paper crusher in her 10th grade geometry class.

It happened so fast and so early in the year!  It had to be September or early October.  I was
clearing my desk for the next set of problem solving, while she was lecturing on some aspect of
geometry and talking on and on.   In a misguided effort to "do something" while waiting for her to
finish, I crushed my about-to-be discarded paper.

Without skipping a beat, Miss Mauzy's discussion detoured on to the sins of paper crushing, all
the while directing her attention at me.  As I sat there mortified, the class heard one of her famous
lectures on the ills of paper crushing and as Dorothy so vividly recalled the "correct" method of
paper disposal.  Miss Mauzy concluded her discussion with, "And I think I have crushed the paper
crusher", which I can tell you was certainly true!

SAY WHAT?!!

“I think that it's important actually not to make fun of them (North Korea) for the fact that their
Taepodong (missle), this one, failed because that just kind of eggs them on - Madeleine Albright,
former secretary of state on the Larry King Live show.  Letterman and Leno, take note.

FROM THE LAUGH TRACK

A Louisiana TV station aired an interview with a woman of color from New Orleans. The
interviewer asked the lady how such total and complete devastation of the churches in the area
had affected their lives.

The woman replied, "I don't know about all those other peoples, but we gets our chicken from
Popeye's." - Submitted by webmstr. Phil Aquino

June 22 – Elvis’s favorite fairground’s attraction, the Pippin, sold for a paltry $2500 to two
Nashville men. The second oldest operating wooden roller coaster in the nation was sold to a
private party that originally intended to purchase only one car as a piece of Elvis memorabilia.
The ride, built in 1912, may be retained for this year’s Mid-south Fair, (9/21 – 10/1).The sale of
over 200 items brought slightly over $850,000. The Merry-Go-Round, the only item to escape the
auctioneer’s gavel, may be relocated in Memphis.

June 23 – First, Baptist Central, then the Fairgrounds, now Crump Stadium. Russ Vollmer

Speaking of  “The Birds”, we were, weren’t we? Alfred Hichcock’s inspiration
for the ’63 hit movie may have been the 1961 invasion by thousands of sea
birds into northern California. The birds were flying under the influence of
algae tainted with domoic acid, which tends to act as an intoxicant. In June

’06, a Calif. Brown Pelican, under the influence of the acid, flew through the

windshield of an automobile being driven along the Pacific Coast Highway in
Orange County, Ca. As of this writing, the bird is recovering at the Wetlands

and Wildlife Care Ctr. CLICK TO VIEW BIRDS REDUX

Happy Birthday to you, Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday dear I 40. On June 29 th, the nation
celebrated the 50 th birthday of the Interstate highway system. In 1919, after seeing the ease with
which Germany moved convoys across their nation via the autobahn, the U.S. military chose Dwight
D. Eisenhower to take a convoy across America. The trip took several months. In 1956, Congress
passed the Federal-Aid Highway Act. The system was originally named the National System of
Interstate and Defense Highways. We just call it the Xpressway.

Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Tucson were 1, 2 & 3 respectively in Old Spice’s “Sweatiest Cities”

Also, Happy birthday dear bikini.  On July 5 th,the world observed the 60 th birthday of the bikini.
French designer and former engineer Louis Reard introduced the swimsuit,in 1946, which
shockingly revealed the navel of its wearers. Because of this, the attire didn’t receive widespread
acceptance until the ’60’s. Thankfully, we were there to see it.
