MEMORIES by William Andrews (as told to his daughter Leeba Andrews Curlin)

The Flood in 1937...As I look back over memory lane, I do recall certain things that took
place at Central High School in the flood of 1937.  At that time I was in the 11th grade,
and I remember that the hill that protects Arkansas was broken, and the swollen waters
of the flooded Mississippi River inundated eastern Arkansas, flooding thousands of homes
and leaving countless numbers of families stranded from their homes.  I remember that we
all got together and took up every desk in the building, and countless cots were brought in,
and hundreds of refugees filled the sacred halls of our beloved Central High School.  The
kitchen was converted, and supplies brought in to feed those dear people.
 

Of course we were delighted to help these people in their difficulties, and we enjoyed the
freedom of being out of school for several weeks. I cannot remember exactly how long the
occupation of Central lasted, but I believe it was a number of weeks.  I remember that my
cousin Fred Smithwick and I had fun skating all over town and just being free as the birds
to come and go as we pleased.

Dr. William Farr Andrews died June 29, 2005 in Memphis, at the age of 84.

6/3 – Penny Dollar Campbell stopped for a week in Memphis, on her way to the windy
city, to visit with old friends, Sandra Dodson, and Mike Kriese. The three on them, along

7/4 – Though, she’s no longer a teen, MISSING WARRIOR Sandra Daniels was found
in our own backyard, Hernando, Ms. Her name is now Sandra Hoover. You can help us

From Susan Gray McInnis:  Catherine, our sweet and talented daughter-in-law, will be
selling her "Write Plate" live and in person on the QVC cable/TV channel on Friday,
August 5th, in the 2-4 pm time slot, Eastern Standard time.  The show will be out of
Nashville and features new products and inventors.  Our son Roger is going with her,
so we get to keep the girls.  We will be glued to the TV from 1-3, Texas time :)

We are so proud of the way Catherine has developed and grown her in-home business ..
the parent company she named "My Ruby Slippers", since to her there was no place like
home!  The Write Plate is a write-on, wipe-off decorative, porcelain message plate.  The

a TV on Friday.  Wish her luck and a sell-out!

Movin, movin, movin though they’re disapproving…. Newly weds (Dec’04) Carol Jean Lewis
Towler and Harley have moved inland from Boca Raton to Ocala Florida.

Fitzgerald’s Casino, Robinsonville, MS, has hired me to implement and administer their
program to comply with Sarbanes-Oxley Act, which is designed to counter fraud and
embezzlement at publicly traded companies. This means that all revenue related processes
must be documented, tracked and tested, continually. The General Manager of Fitzgerald’s
and I are friends, having worked together at Hollywood Casino. Also I am talking with recording
engineers about a possible Blasers CD.  The priority is securing commitments from people
wishing to participate.

My baby daughter, Maeghan, 30, is getting married July 16 in Little Rock. Her new husband
is Matt Mittlestaedt, a former professional soccer player, who plans to teach and coach.
Meggie is a sports fashions buyer with Dillard’s corporate offices and must travel extensively.
She attended the International Academy of Merchandise and Design in Chicago for their two
year program. This is the Wharton of retailing.

Most importantly, yes, Jerry, The King, Lawler is moving to
the DeSoto County Civic Center.  The center is only 1½ miles
from my house, so I can go see arena football, ice hockey and
‘rasslin’ (get the spelling straight) under the same roof.  I’m
waitin’ for the center to feature tractor pulls and monster trucks…
then I’ll be in Valhalla.  All I need is for Dickie Cooper
to come down from Omaha and go with me or, better yet,
he can move to Mississippi.  Then I can drive by and pick him up.

NEWS FOR THE OUT OF TOWNER

7/10 -  At two overflow services, Bellevue Baptist Church voted, overwhelmingly, to call
Dr. Steven Gaines as the 7 th Sr. Pastor in its century of existence. Dr. Gaines, 47, is
currently the pastor of First Baptist Church of Gardendale, Ala. near Birmingham. Dr Gaines
will assume the pulpit on Sept. 11.

7/13 - On this date, in 1980, Memphis recorded its all-time record high temperature of 108.
The summer of ‘80 was the hottest on record for the city, with 57 temperature records either
tied or broken, half in the month of July. July’s average temperature was 88.9. 83 Deaths in
Memphis were attributed to the heat wave, which lasted until mid September.

WAR OF THE WORLDS revisited
This July and Aug., Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the
closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. Mars may come this close is
until 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers
can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the Last 5,000 years, but
it may be as long as 60,000 years before it happens again.

The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles
of Earth and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a
magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide at a modest 75-power magnification.

only minor damages and power outages, not even Mother Nature messes with Don Deaton.
