NCF’s GARROTT AND KING HONORED BY TENNESSEE BANKERS ASSOCIATION

Among Elite Group Selected as Leaders in Banking Excellence

NASHVILLE – Shelby County bankers Thomas M. Garrott and Charles C. King III have been named members of Leaders in Banking Excellence, a program that recognizes an elite group representing Tennessee bankers past and present who have excelled in the areas of banking, community service and civic involvement. The Tennessee Bankers Association recently honored them during a ceremony at the TBA’s new headquarters building in Nashville.

Garrott served as chairman and CEO of National Commerce Financial. Under Garrott’s leadership, NCF earned a national reputation for innovation in retail banking delivery systems. The bank was a pioneer of the large-scale, in-store banking industry in the early 1980s. About 40 percent of NCF’s 500 company-owned locations were operated in nontraditional retail spaces in 10 Southern states.

King, who retired in 2006 from SunTrust Bank, is the former president and chairman of three subsidiaries of National Commerce Financial, which was acquired by SunTrust Bank during its merger with National Bank of Commerce. King is now Chairman of the Senior Housing Crime Prevention Foundation in Memphis.

In the late 1990s, U.S. Banker named NCF the top-performing bank in the country two times during a five-year span. Garrott is well-known as a leader and expert in the banking industry, having been asked to testify before congressional subcommittees concerning banking legislation.

“Thomas Garrott’s banks were nationally renowned for their efficiency and innovation,” TBA President Brad Barrett said. “He is an esteemed banker and has truly been a leader in his field.”

King began banking career in 1992 as president of NCF’s wholly owned subsidiary, USI Alliance Corporation. In this position, he founded and became chairman of the Senior Housing Crime Prevention Foundation and the Senior Crimestoppers program.

“Charles King has worked tirelessly to help banks participate in activities that benefit members of their communities,” TBA President Brad Barrett said. “His dedication to the Senior Crimestoppers Program has helped the program provide peace of mind to thousands of nursing home residents across the country.”

Due in large part to King’s efforts, the Senior Crimestoppers Program has reduced crime against nursing home residents by 91.2 percent. King is responsible for gaining all necessary approvals and recognitions for the Senior Crimestoppers Program to become an accepted Community Reinvestment Act credit activity.

King, a longtime advocate for protecting the rights of senior citizens, is the creator of the

national “Wish Comes True” donation grant program for fulfilling wishes of nursing home residents and the national “The Time of Your Life” video exhibit for nursing home residents. Both programs are part of the SHCPF Foundation.

Garrott holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Vanderbilt University and a master’s degree in business administration from the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania. He also served in the U.S. Navy.

He served on the board and executive committee of SunTrust Bank, the board of trustees at Rhodes College and the advisory committee of Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation.

Garrott also served on the executive board at Wharton and as commissioner of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority.

Leaders in Banking Excellence is a new initiative by the TBA to recognize and celebrate exceptional bankers throughout Tennessee’s history, Barrett said. A special plaque commemorating each honoree is displayed in the association’s new headquarters building in Nashville.
